Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
